The weekly toll cap
NSW residents who spend more than $50 a week on tolls for a tag or number plate can claim the rest back as a rebate from the NSW Government, on toll spend up to $400 a week (so up to $350 back a week, and up to $5,000 a year per person). It covers personal trips in a NSW-registered, class A vehicle on a NSW personal toll account linked to MyServiceNSW; business use, casual passes and interstate accounts are excluded. Rebates are worked out weekly and paid quarterly. These are the terms for travel from 6 July 2026, as published by Service NSW; check there before you claim.
How to pay
Every Sydney toll road is cashless: there are no booths. Most drivers use an e-TAG or e-Pass on a toll account; a tag from any Australian toll account provider works on every Sydney motorway, whichever company runs the road.
Without a tag, you can set up a pass that charges trips to your card by matching your number plate, such as the E-Toll eMU Casual Pass from the NSW Government, or open an account. If you have already driven on a toll road without one, Transport for NSW says you have 72 hours to pay or create a toll account; after that a toll notice follows, with a fee on top of the toll. In a hire car, ask the rental company how it handles tolls before you drive.
